Acupuncture

Acupuncture is one of several modalities within the framework of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM).  TCM is a system of health care that is based on energy, rather than the biophysics of Western Allopathic Medicine that most of us in the United States grew up with.  It has evolved over thousands of years and is rooted in theories of harmony, balance and change.  It views the human being "wholeistically", body, mind and spirit together as components of one.  It is used to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness throughout the world, and has been endorsed by The World Health Organization(WHO) to treat over 40 medical conditions.

How does it work?

Energy, or Qi(pronounced chee)flows through specific pathways (channels) in the body, much like blood flows through vessels.  Health depends on the flow of Qi; abundant free flowing Qi results in optimal health.  Acupuncture points lie on these channels and can affect the energy flowing through them.  Thus, they can be used successfully in the treatment of pain, prevention of disease and the maintenance of health.

What is a treatment like?

Most people find acupuncture very relaxing, once they overcome their fear of the needles.  It is not unusual for them to fall asleep during the treatment.  It is important to wear loose, comfortable clothing and to have something to eat and drink (water) before the treatment.  Chiropractic adjustments, massage or strenuous exercise should be avoided for 6 hours after the treatment.  A review of current complaint, taking the pulse, looking at the tongue and physical exam, as necessary, are done to determine the most appropriate and effective treatment.  Then, the patient assumes a comfortable position and very fine, flexible needles are inserted at specific acupuncture points.  Upon insertion, a brief feeling of heaviness or tingling may occur at the site.  The needles are left in place for 15-20 minutes while the patient quietly relaxes and then are removed and discarded.  Often, beneficial results are seen after just a few sessions (for acute conditions), others may require treatments over several weeks (for chronic conditions).

Is it safe?

Yes, acupuncture is very safe.   Only sterile, disposable needles are used, following the Clean Needle Technique in compliance with mandates by the National Commission for Certified Acupuncturists (NCCA).  Going to a Licensed Acupuncturist insures that you are being treated by a fully trained individual who has passed rigorous examination by the National Commission for the Certification of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM).  As for the technique itself, occasional bruising may occur.
